Position Overview:
Our accountants are the powerhouses of our business. They focus on delivering SMSF accounting services to our young and aspiring client base. 

This position provides mentoring from an experienced and knowledgeable Senior SMSF Accountant and offers professional growth and development opportunities within the accounting and SMSF industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare SMSF annual returns, including financial statements and member statements;
  • Conduct reconciliations of SMSF bank accounts, investments, and other assets;
  • Preparation of SMSF supporting document files for review by our independent auditors;
  • Process rollovers, contributions, and benefit payments following superannuation legislation;

Senior SMSF Accountant 🇦🇺

About Grow SMSF

Grow is an entirely digital SMSF administration provider. From setup to ongoing compliance, our team and clients are comfortable working in a paperless environment.

Grow focuses on younger, ambitious wealth accumulator clients. Less than 10% of our clients are in the pension phase.  This focus enables us to deliver a high-quality SMSF solution very efficiently.

We work directly with SMSF trustees, and although financial advisers and other accountants may refer clients to us, we don’t specifically cater to other professionals. Most of our clients find us organically, meaning we are not dependent on any one source of new business, which helps ensure our continued growth. 

Our clients are evenly split across assets such as shares/ETFs (ASX + US), direct property, and crypto. Almost all our clients use the same cash accounts (Macquarie, ANZ V2 PLUS).

Most share/ETF investors are split between a few popular brokers and, likewise, our crypto investors. Again, this commonality enables an efficient approach to completing SMSF accounts with enough variety to ensure the work doesn’t get stale.

We’ve also have a modern and bespoke client portal which has added another layer of efficiency to our business and means less time chasing clients for documents and information and more time getting work done.

About the Position

This role involves completing some SMSF accounts yourself and reviewing the work of at least one intermediate accountant who will have a larger number of SMSF accounts to prepare.

You will be responsible for a portfolio of SMSF clients and must ensure the annual SMSF accounts are completed in alignment with our quality control processes and lodgement program. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Requesting required documentation from clients (via our portal);
  • Preparing annual SMSF accounts ready for review and audit using Class;
  • Liaising with clients about queries;
  • Working with our independent auditors;
  • Reviewing jobs completed by intermediate SMSF accountants and providing feedback, training and support;

The main KPI we track is completed jobs for you and any other SMSF accountants you oversee.  This number will depend on your capacity and expected remuneration. 

Where required, Grow will provide and secure suitable computer equipment. Candidates must provide their own screens. Multiple screens are essential (salary sacrifice options are available).

Career advancement options for this role include progression to an SMSF Account Manager position.

About You

You must be competent and experienced in preparing SMSF accounts and have previously worked in a similar senior SMSF accountant role. On average, our senior SMSF accountants have more than 10 years of experience. 

You must have multiple years of experience using Class Super or SuperMate. BGL experience is less relevant. We don’t use BGL and do not plan on using it now. 

The more funds you’ve looked after, the better. 

Formal qualifications (CPA/CA) are not required, but they are favourably considered. Specialised experience and a genuine passion for SMSFs are essential. 

The ability to plan your work and execute it is essential. Although you will have access to procedural and technical support, you must be able to work independently. 

You must be competent in all aspects of SMSF administration including:

  • All asset types, including property, shares, managed funds, cryptocurrency and any non-standard investment;
  • Both accumulation and pension funds;
  • Onboarding of existing SMSFs;
  • SMSF windups;

Strong computer skills are essential, especially in Excel/Google Sheets. If you need help with your formulas, no judgment if you use ChatGPT—in fact, it’s encouraged!

This role provides flexibility and would suit someone who is performance driven, wants to complete valuable work that fits into their life, rather than their life needing to fit into their work schedule. 

Being a 100% work-from-home role, this position is not suitable for people who enjoy:

  • A highly sociable work culture;
  • Office politics;
  • No forks in the team kitchen;
  • Meetings that could have been emails.

  • Monitoring incoming emails and live chat messages and routing to the correct team members;

Key duties:

  • Handling inbound ‘sales’ enquiries from potential customers investigating Grow as an SMSF provider;
  • Monitoring incoming emails and live chat messages and providing timely responses;

  • Entering customer details in our CRM;
  • Providing procedural support to our customers through all stages of their SMSF journey, with a focus on the SMSF setup process;

Grow SMSF is seeking an experienced SMSF professional to join our team. This 100% remote work-from-home position requires deep SMSF technical expertise, practical SMSF administration experience and superb communication skills.

This role has come from the fast organic growth of our client base and is part of a larger strategic plan as the business scales its operations.

About the Position

This role involves leveraging your technical SMSF expertise to assist Grow’s customers and the team.

The client-focused parts of the role include:

  • Answer technical SMSF questions from our client base (phone/email);
  • Hands-on delivery of project-related work that falls outside the scope of annual accounts or SMSF establishment services, for example, pension work, tax and SMSF compliance advice, changes of trustee (no financial advice);

The team-focused parts of the role include:

  • Answer technical questions from our customer success and accounting teams;
  • Quality reviews of work produced by our SMSF accounting team;
  • Responsibility for our internal quality control systems;
  • Conduct both ad-hoc and scheduled training sessions with a major focus on upskilling the capabilities of both our experienced accountants and less experienced team members.

This role is a senior position in the organisation, reporting directly to the CEO. You will also work closely with our SMSF accounting production manager (they are responsible for productivity and lodgement KPIs).

KPIs

  • Revenue from project-related technical and SMSF consulting services;
  • Queries raised by our independent auditors;
  • Internal training hours delivered;
  • Internal knowledge base items created.

About you

You will have significant experience in large SMSF accounting divisions or within a specialist SMSF administration business. You likely will have SMSF accounting experience.

Your communication skills must be superb. You will need to communicate effectively (both written and verbal) to anyone, from a new SMSF trustee just starting their journey to an experienced SMSF accountant with over 10 years of experience. 

As this role is remote, you can be based anywhere in Australia, but you must be comfortable working and developing relationships with the team via electronic channels. Being good with technology and having experience with SMSF accounting platforms like Class, SuperMate and BGL is also essential.  

You must be practical, results-orientated and not afraid to get your hands dirty.

Previous experience in a similar role is essential, and specialist SMSF qualifications are highly desirable.
